Superintendent’s Message

August 26, 2019

Dear Parents, Residents, and All Members of the Greater Malverne School Community,

Now that we are about to complete our preparations for the start of another school year, I want to sincerely thank everyone for your support and personal contributions to the education and welfare of our students.

As you have probably noticed, our major construction at Malverne High School including a Performing Arts Center and STEM Lab classrooms are on schedule for use in September, 2019. In the meantime, all of our schools have been enhanced with landscaping, lighting, security systems and classroom renovations to accommodate increased student enrollments for 2019-2020. These improvements have begun to pay for themselves with significant cost savings. Also of note, for the last several years our school district has been recognized by the New York State Comptroller's Office for financial efficiency and expertise.

Malverne saw a 90% increase since 2013 in the number of Advanced Placement exams that were administered during the 2018-2019 school year. 82% of our students achieved a score of three or higher on an AP exam, this is over 15% higher than the NYS average and over 18% higher than the global average! Malverne students have demonstrated a steady increase since 2008 in the number of exams taken, as well as in passing percentages. In 2008, only 17% of students achieved a score of 3 or higher while 55% met this same measure in 2013. This year, a record number of students earned honors as AP Scholars with 35 AP Scholars, 11 AP Scholars with Honors, 29 AP Scholars with Distinction; and 1 National AP Scholar. As a testament to the school's continued growth and improvement, Malverne High School was noted as a model school by the New York State Education Department and the University of Albany NYKids Research study whose purpose is to share with the education community successful strategies for schools. The US News and World Report recognized Malverne High School as one of America's Best High Schools and was ranked in the top 11 % in the nation.

As the summer continues to progress and the plans for September come together, one can hear the familiar reverberations from the "Pride of Malverne" NY State Championship Band practicing for a repeat winning performance. Fall sports are organizing for practice and teachers are stopping by to prepare their classrooms. It is truly satisfying and inspirational to feel the ongoing improvement and recognition we are all achieving as members of a unified Malverne family dedicated to the success of all children in our care.

All of us are anticipating the start of another exciting and productive school year on Wednesday, September 4, 2019. Our annual homecoming festivities including
parade/ childrens' fair and homecoming football game will happen on October 12th This year's homecoming events will also include an official "ribbon cutting" concert and tour of the new Performing Arts Center facilities and STEM lab classrooms. Hopefully, everyone will join us to make this a community weekend that recognizes the accomplishments and blessings we have continued to enjoy as a Malverne school-community family over the years.
