Superintendent’s Message

August 1, 2018

Dear Parents, Residents, and All Members of the Greater Malverne School Community,

Now that we are about to complete our preparations for the start of another school year, I want to sincerely thank everyone for your support and personal contributions to the education and welfare of our students.

As you have probably noticed, our major Bond project is now in full swing with the Malverne High School building addition now under construction.  The Work will continue throughout the new school year with an opening scheduled for September, 2019.  In the meantime, all of our schools have been enhanced with new landscaping, lighting, security systems and classroom renovations to accommodate increased student enrollments for 2018-2019.  The bond project also includes internal renovations for state-of-the art STEM laboratory classrooms and a counseling center for college research and student needs.  Air conditioning has been added to all school cafeterias, the high school weight room and the Herber auditorium.  Most of the bathrooms throughout the district have been completely renovated and new windows and roofs have been completed.  Energy conservation improvements have already begun to pay for themselves with significant cost savings realized to date.  For the last several years our school district has been recognized by the New York State Comptroller’s Office for financial efficiency and expertise.

On the academic side, the Malverne High School graduating class of 2018 has established new standards for high achievement.  A record number of Advanced Placement Scholars (71), including an unprecedented 4 National AP Scholars and an exemplary 77% passing rate for scores of 3 or better on a total of 348 AP exams is surely commendable.  Another record was established for NYS Regents Diploma graduates at 99% and a new high for “Advanced” Regents diploma graduates at 64%.  Several of our seniors earned certificates of distinction as Project Lead The Way (P.L.T.W) grads in the fields of Engineering/Computer Science and Bio-Medical Science Research.  With 93% of the class on their way to colleges of choice, the new standards for student success have been established as a challenge for those who will follow in September.

During the summer, the district has been active with several supplemental learning programs, including our traditional Summer Reading Program for all students.  Opportunities for student achievement and personal improvement have been scheduled for the next school year, including several new co-curricular clubs, elementary school electives in the 9 period day, Springboard Program, Pre-AP, AP Capstone, Middle School Regents classes, additional AP subjects, “senior seminar” elective and PTA-sponsored enrichment programs/events.  All in all, there are a multitude of choices for learning and growth available to all who are willing to sign up and work hard.

As the summer continues to progress and the plans for September come together, I can hear the familiar reverberations from the “Pride of Malverne” NY State Championships Band intermingled with the concordant construction noise.  Fall sports are organizing for practice and teachers are stopping by to prepare their classrooms.  It is truly satisfying and inspirational to feel the momentum of progress we are all experiencing as members of the unified Malverne family dedicated to the success of all children in our care.

We are all anticipating the start of another exciting and productive school year on Tuesday, September 4, 2018.  Our annual homecoming festivities including parade/fair and homecoming football game will happen on September 22nd.  Hopefully, everyone will join us to make this a community weekend that celebrates the accomplishments and blessings we have continued to enjoy as a Malverne school-community family.

Sincerely,

James H. Hunderfund, Ed.D.
